Lost Doll Parts – In Crochet

June 5, 2011

I’ve been working with the lost and found arms or legs of plastic dolls. One part of the work has involved casting them in lead crystal glass and displaying them in jewelry boxes. This explores themes of preciousness and value and comments on consumerism. In my crochet works I have embroidered a series of surreal images to do with lost doll parts that addresses the theme of loss more directly. Its psychological loss – parts of the self that ‘come off’ – that I am exploring (not accidents of the body). The parts that have come off are in a sort of nowhere land in which they are either floating aimlessly, lying at rest, on a mission to find something or in pain. But there is hope. Lost parts can be found, rescued and rejoined to the whole. I had no idea what this was about when I started, or while I was doing it, and changed direction a few times. But it all became clear this week when I had to write an artists narrative.
