VAPE 2011 location is in the bag.

May 21, 2011

Andy and Pete came down to Grahamstown to meet up with me on Friday. I took them on a little tour of the walls which I have got legalized for the VAPE2011. Without any debate we chose this one. We all think it’s going to be perfect. In a side street of the main road through town there are a couple of hair and braid salons, a courtyard and the wall. After checking it out for a few minutes we all started getting stoked on having all the artists down and getting loose together on VAPE MURAL. There are more than 14 of us already! There is ample space in the shade to rest and spread equipment and possibly set up some kind of sound to keep things on a good level while we work.

We were all pretty keen on the idea of the thrust of the wall being comic-book orientated by splitting it up into big panels and having each artist work on their own one. We took this idea further by deciding to make each artists panel in the shape of a letter for them to mould, fill in, block out or work around which would correlate to a phrase running across the wall. Who has ideas for the phrase? We were thinking of keeping it relative to the theme of property, ownership, collaboration and reinventing spaces. So hit us with suggestions on the blog.

It’s in about a month’s time now and I’m getting seriously excited to be collaborating with so many people from all over this country and the world. I can’t wait to see how it turns out – it is no doubt going to be a bold mix of crazy styles…

WOW!! I’m stoked!–can’t wait to get my brush to that wall.
LOVE the photo from the inside of the hairsalon, leopard print ‘n all: woman ROAR!!
    but…eh…what about that phrase/word for the letters..? a 14 letter word…
“hypnotherapist”? “troublemaking”? “ultraglamorous” (good one for the hairsalons)

What does VAPE stand for? (or am I missing something?)

VAPE = Visual Art Performance Event … so art happening live, as an ‘entertainment’ … I think.

Yay! It was Great being in G’Town this last weekend and also meeting Daniel. The wall is in a super location, lots of space for people to gather, without obstructing traffic. Shade and hair salons.. The wall is just Off Anglo African street. Andy was quite exited about the name. “ANGLO AFRICAN” as possibly the theme/word. I kinda like it too..
