Selected artists have been invited to participate and exhibit in Co/Mix: Comic Art/Mixed Media 2011, a collaborative group exhibition and visual art performance event on the main programme of the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, 29 June – 14 July 2011.

Co/Mix is a new initiative that aims to showcase the work of artists who are working at the interface of comic art, illustration and visual narrative. Participants will be working in a range of media, hence ‘Comic Art/Mixed Media’. The exhibition will involve approximately 20 artists working in cartooning, comics, toy-making, sculpture, assemblage, graffiti, street art, drawing, painting, and digital image construction. The work may take any form, including animation and installation, provided that it is based around a unique narrative created or developed by the artist for the exhibition. Work may be part of a larger project in which the artist is currently engaged.

Co/Mix is envisaged as a collaborative event, and this blog has been set up for participants to show their work in progress and engage with each other. It is hoped that, through this collaborative process, common themes will emerge that provide a unifying discourse for the show. Participants will be expected to post examples or fragments of their work in progress on this blog at regular intervals.

We are also hoping to produce a publication called Co/Mix 2011, featuring the participating artists, to be launched at the event, depending on our ability to secure financial support for it.

Co/Mix 2001 will be located in a ‘Co/Mix  Pavilion’ to be set up in the Thomas Pringle Hall in the main festival building. The Pavilion will consist of the group exhibition where works will be on sale to festival goers, a gallery shop where we will sell smaller works and other merchandise by participating artists, and an area where talks and workshops will be held. We will have a Co/Mix person on hand at the venue at all times to greet the public and manage sales.

We also hope to involve a couple of exciting international artists in the event and will release more details once their participation is confirmed.

Co/Mix will also be undertaking an outdoor Visual Art Performance Event (VAPE) in Grahamstown, which will involve the creation of a street mural in Grahamstown or environs.

Selected artists have been asked to submit their ideas for the exhibition and for any products that may be suitable for sale in the gallery shop. Funding support is available to participants for the transport and insurance of their art works and merchandise. The artists are also encouraged to make the trip to Grahamstown and get involved in the various events that we are planning. Our approach is fully collaborative and from mid-February we will be using the Festival’s marketing team and every other resource at our disposal to market and build the public profile of the event.

Once the artists have indicated their willingness to participate, we’ll send them a detailed document explaining everything, and a contract. The contract document outlines the commission structure and the respective roles and responsibilities of Co/Mix and the participating artists. Artists must respond by 31st January, following which contracts will be signed by 7th February. Details of the participating artists will be posted as soon as they are confirmed.

Co/Mix is a collaboration between the National Arts Festival and the Centre for Comic, Illustrative and Book Arts (CCIBA), and organised and managed by Andy Mason, Elaine Woodbridge, Lieve Vanleeuw and Pete Woodbridge. We welcome and encourage questions, comments and ideas.
